From Acclaim to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Release is Divided.
Conservative reactions to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Defends Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the censorship process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and image are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread black blocks raise significant questions about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded increased openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Figures Rally In Support of the Release
However, some rightwing pundits and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
But a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, enabled some conservative voices to go on the attack.
“It’s quite rich how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these files for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for action that came before the congressional vote to pass a law requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were given hard-copy folders of files that contained little previously unseen data.
