Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This
Each time a significant honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
